Award for Service to Archery in Western Australia.

Kaye Duncan.
Bob Willis.
William (Bill) Nicholson.
Julie Thompson.

Kaye Duncan

What can we say about Kaye except that she’s just a girl who can’t say "No" and without her we’d be in a terrible fix.

Kaye took up Archery last century, at the start of the 1990’s. She joined the Bowmen of Melville, which her husband Alistair had already joined. She was already heavily involved in running a Brownies troupe but in her first year in Archery she became involved in the administration and organising at the club.

Kaye and Alistair took time off for a working holiday in the UK but retained their membership in Australia although they also joined the Malden Bowmen whilst on their trip and shot in many UK tournaments.

Since taking up Archery, Kaye has been the Archery’s Society’s Treasurer since 1997, Treasurer for the huge 1999 Nationals Indoor and "Head to Head International" Tournament , a member of the Mad Committee for several years, and still found time to train as a member of our 1998, 2000 and 2001 State Teams.

During this time too, she has been Club Treasurer, Social Director, and Catering Manager, and in her spare time has been raising two very young children, maintained her involvement in the Brownie movement, and continued her career.

The 2003 ASWA Annual General Meeting agreed with her recommendation to split the Treasurer’s job for the future, and so ease an increasing workload for that position, but she has offered to do one of the new positions.

You will have to stay tuned to find out what she is going to do with all of her new found leisure time.

Veteran’s Award for Service to Archery in Western Australia for his contribution to Archery in Western Australia for over 35 years.

Bob Willis

The dictionary describes a gentleman as a cavalier, an aristocrat, and a brick. This definition could also be used to describe Bob Willis.

Bob took up Archery with the Swan Bowmen in the mid-1960’s and was something of a mean Field shooter. When Swan Bowmen closed, he was a founding member of the Benara Bowmen and is now a member of the Sorrento Archery Club.

We all know that when there is a busy bee, or nationals or another major event, Bob will be there. He is always working in the background getting things done quietly and efficiently and to be honest he is someone that we fail to thank often enough. He doesn’t expect thanks but deserves it.

With too much time in retirement, a few months ago, Bob and Marion Willis took on the job of managers of the Archery Park and in doing so have lifted the standard of service and for the last three months we have realised operating profits - this is nine months ahead of what was predicted when the park was first conceived. They now have many group bookings into the new year too.

Archery is much richer from having members like, the gentleman, Bob Willis.

Veteran’s Award for Service to Archery in Western Australia for his contribution to Archery in Western Australia for over 35 years - ASWA Life membership.

William (Bill) Nicholson

Bill has been a member of the Archery Society for 33 years and on the ASWA Executive for seventeen years and has taken on many non-executive roles too

Prior to Archery becoming his life, he was living in the highlands of Scotland and had never even heard the English language. He now speaks Scottish (most of the time), English and is proficient in sign language.

He was sixteen when he started shooting and was a founding member of the Governor Stirling Archery Club in 1972.

In 1976, he became ASWA's youngest Treasurer and held that position for a number of years. During these years too he also managed to meet Heather and they married, and had two daughters Candice and Amber. He has really done his bit to recruit members and workers for ASWA.

As his marriage and daughters matured, Bill, and Heather, became more involved in developing our sport.

In the late 80's he joined the Archer Australia Rules Committee and stayed there for 5 years and then in 1992 it was our good fortune when he became the President of ASWA and held that position for 8 years. During that time too he was the Archery Australia's WA Board Member.

Still not busy enough, he was also the chairman of the 1996, 2000 and 2003 Nationals Committees and a committee member for four other Nationals and the 1988 Asia and Oceania Target Archery Championships.

There must have been a full moon or something in the 90's because since that time he has also been the ASWA Tournament Chairman for 4 years, Grand Prix Coordinator for 4 years, League Coordinator for 2 years, MAD Committee Chairman for 4 years, State Team Manager twice, National Judge, and Level 1 Coach

He has fitted twenty four terms of office into fourteen years.

Having said all of this, I have not even started to outline his club activities but you should know that he has been club president for 21 years, and was club secretary for 6 years, coaching for 13 years, and club delegate to ASWA for 5 years.

To add to his achievements, we now have the next generation coming through and are pleased to have Amber Nicholson chairing the State Selection Committee. All the way through too, Heather has been by his side.
