Below: Lecturers and
Participants in the Archery Instructor Course on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th August 2007.
As one of the people doing the
Course I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about
Archery in general. The fact that you can then go on and teach others as
a Qualified Instructor after completing the course is a bonus.
John Dwyer. Secretary Sunset Coast Archers.
For ASWA members the cost of the course
was $100 which included an excellent Coaching reference book:
Archery Australia Inc Introduction to Archery which ASWA members
can get for $20 through Club secretaries.

A Note on the Coaches meeting held on
Friday 24th May 2007 at the WA Archery Centre, from Coaching Coordinator / Development Officer, Sue Gliddon.
The meeting was well
received by the 25 attendees. Coaches and archers from various clubs met
to further enhance their skills by listening to a presentation from Mr
Birch on the Biomechanics of the bow shoulder and arm.
The power point presentation detailed muscles of the shoulder, the back
and arm and highlighted the need and purpose of using correct
biomechanics to increase performance and prevent injuries. This
information was particularly useful to help understand the importance of
not ‘over bowing’ our juniors and beginners and showing that some of our
longer standing archers may be ‘over bowed’.
Other subjects discussed were requirements of the Pathway Program and
the available position of Assistant State Coach. If you are interested
in the position please contact Ken Birch to discuss the role further
You would need to fulfil the following
requirements.

ASWA

The following is from Ken Birch
ASWA State
Coach 2006-2007 Pathway Coach, AA RHPC (WA) on
MENTORING.
Mentoring is
essentially helping another person to develop their practice (in this
instance, coaching) for the better. Mentoring situations allow for
personnel to learn the ‘art’ of the duties of the office of those to
whom they may succeed and not make the same mistakes as their
predecessor.
Mentoring can be formally or casually structured, bringing benefits to the coach or
official, to the mentor and the organisation.
Mentoring involves
the following processes;
Selection of a
prospective mentee is similar to listing certain requirements for a job
description e.g. regarding an Assistant Sate Coach. They would need to
have Archery Australia coach accreditation, Working With Children Check
clearance, current financial membership of ASWA, minimum of 5(?) years
of archery coaching experience and a technical knowledge of recurve and
compound bows. Ideally to also have presentation skills or have
conducted coaching sessions at their club.
