Sadly, I must inform you of the
passing of Lynn Axford last after a long illness.
Lynn was the ASWA Treasurer for a
number of years, a member of several Nationals Organising
Committees, and an organiser and helper at the Junior Camps that
used to be held in the May School holidays.
At a club level she was the
Secretary of Gosnells Archers for many years and a stalwart of the
club. For the Axfords, it was a family affair with husband Marty,
sons Alan and Wayne and sister Chrissy all shooting.
Lynn is survived by Alan and his
family

IMPORTANT NEWS FOR
JUNIORS
From the CEO of
Archery Australia
At the recent Archery
Australia Board meeting the way in which the age of juniors is
determined was changed. This will come into force from the 1st
January 2004 with the 2004 Junior Nationals excepted.
The C&R Committee is developing the exact wording that will be used
in the Archery Australia Rule book but the motion that was moved is
-
Juniors shall be eligible to participate in any junior competition
providing they are of or under the age of 18, 16, 14 and 12 years
respectively when the competition takes place in the year of the
18,16,14 or 12 birthday.
Reason - Currently a junior archer advances up an age division the
day of their birthday. Under this change the junior would not
advance up an age division until the 31st December of the year of
their birthday.
This brings age divisions in line with FITA Rules.
From ASWA Secretary, a summary: Whatever age a Junior is on the 1st
January, he or she will shoot in that age group until the 31
December of that year.
AWARDS FOR SERVICE TO ARCHERY.
In recognition of
their service to Archery, over a long period of time, Kaye Duncan
and Bob Willis were presented with Society awards at the 2003
Presentation Dinner.
If there is someone in
your club, who you believe deserves to be acknowledged for their
work for the sport, then please send a nomination to ASWA. For
eligibility details are available and an easy to complete nomination
form. The base mark is ten years or more membership of ASWA.
It is a fantastic
experience to see people’s shocked looks at the Dinner each year
when they are named as an award recipient.
Recently distributed AA rule
clarification.
In answer to the
request for clarification regarding arrow diameter size for clout
under Archery Australia Inc Rules.
Till 1st January,
2004 there is no restriction on the diameter size of arrows for
clout shot to Archery Australia Inc Rules.
After 1st January
2004 there will be the FITA standard restriction applied as Chapter
8 has been amended and is now approved by the Board - i.e. max 9.3mm
for shafts and 9.4mm for points for all divisions except Longbow
(the amendments will be circulated shortly).
Arrow size is one of the amendments
and was done to standardize and avoid confusion for competitors and
judges.

Archery Australia
National Teams Matchplay Championship
Western Australia (ASWA) did
amazingly well in the team matchplay on Saturday, the 3rd of May.
W.A entered two teams in the days proceedings: a men’s recurve
matchplay team and a field matchplay team.
Both teams consisted of
the best archers present from W.A for their divisions, everybody
knew that W.A was going to be highly competitive even before the day
began. The men’s recurve matchplay team consisted of Alfie Bass
(BAL), Nick Graham (BAL) and Chris Madeley (BOM), the team was
coached by experienced archer Wayne Messenger. This team was the
first of the two W.A teams competing on the day. For the first match
W.A had a bye, and were sent straight into the semi final against a
highly rated Victoria. The crowd of West Aussies roared with support
going into the first end, each arrow was followed with a big cheer
from the crowd. After the first end of 9 arrows W.A gained
themselves a small lead over Victoria, of just one point. The second
end showed more great shooting from both teams and after both teams
shooting the same score for the end, so W.A kept their narrow one
point lead. Going into the final end the nerves were high. Great
shooting from all team members in the last end ensured W.A.'s win in
the match, the final score 206 - 211, W.A won!!! Everybody was
nervous for the gold medal match, against South Queensland, who were
lead by hot shot AIS archer Robert Turner. Tragedy struck in the
first end, blues and blacks everywhere for W.A left them 7 points
behind after 9 arrows! But the best archers always pull through, and
the team focused on making up for immense lost ground from the first
end. Reasonable shooting in the second end kept W.A in the match.
After the second end the progressive scores were announced and much
to everybody’s disbelief W.A were five points ahead, but
unfortunately this was soon corrected with W.A still five points
behind! The final end was the team's moment of truth for W.A. The
team was spot on with its shooting and a barrage of 6 golds in the
final end kept the Queenslanders honest, and made the weaker
opposition archers slip up under pressure. W.A had pulled through an
amazing win and the crowd went wild, 204 - 202 gave W.A their first
gold medal for the day! The field matchplay team consisted of the
gun compounder David Crabtree (SOR), marksman recurver Chris Madeley
(BOM) and star barebow archer Andrew Scandlin (BAL). This amazing
team towered over the other five not only in ability and expertise
but also good looks. W.A were the 4th team to begin the event, but
looked like winners from the beginning. For the first arrow of the
match David Crabtree nailed the five from 55m, followed by Chris
Madeley. Andrew Scandlin finished off the target, giving W.A the
highest score of any team for the first target. They then followed
up this effort on the second target. All the way through to the last
target W.A dominated over all of the other teams scoring 51 points
out of a possible 60, winning by a huge 6 points over the silver
medallists who scored 45. The teams field event was the last event
of a week of great success for W.A, who took home many medals.
Hopefully we can send a larger State team next year, for even more
successes. Star of the day... Andrew Scandlin, barebow archer and
backbone of W.A.'s success in the field teams event.
